CANADIAN DREAMS: MUSINGS ON KICK-ASS CANUCK MOVIES

Once upon a time in Canada people would line up to watch home grown talent kickin' ass on the big screen - how I miss the 80s & 90s!!!!

I remember lining up at the Cineplex in the Eaton Centre to watch Dragon Hunt, the martial arts masterpiece by the world famous Twin Dragons of Toronto - Martin and Michael McNamara. This gem inspired me, and countless others, to make our own kick-ass movies in our backyards and laneways.

So, why aren't we seeing any more Canadian Martial Arts flicks?

Another prime example was the highly successful "Balance of Power" starring international sensation Billy Blanks. That movie actually turned a nice profit for Alliance Releasing back in the day.

So, why aren't Canadian filmmakers making action movies any more? The general public has come to believe that Canadian Films are Art Films that rarely make a profit - for the most part they are right.

I call on Canadian producers to return to the kick-ass genre soon! Let's start filling the seats at Canadian screenings! I mean, if it can work in Quebec (NITRO), it can work for english Canada as well!!!!!

I love a good old fashioned dose of Anne of Green Gables any day of the week, but a great car cash and fight scene can never be beat!

Let's start getting Canadians excited about Canadian films. It's not all about budgets, it's about passion!
